Waubonsie State Park Winter Tree Identification Workshop

Bob Henrickson, Assistant Director of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum led a winter tree identification hike along the Waubonsie loess hills overlooking the Missouri River, March 23, 2007. Many species can be identified by bark characteristics, leaves still clinging to trees, or bud anatomy.

American elm, Ulmus americana

American linden, Tilia americana

Bitternut hickory, Carya cordiformis

Black walnut, Juglans nigra

Blackberry, Rubus allegheniensis

Bur oak, Quercus macrocarpa

Chinkapin, Quercus muelenbergii

Eastern cottonwood, Populus deltoides

Green ash, Fraxinus pennsylvanica

Hackberry, Celtis oxidentalis

Honey locust, Gelditsia triacanthos

Hop hornbeam, Ostrya virginiana

Red cedar, Juniperus virginiana

Red oak, Quercus borealis

Redbud, Cercis canadensis

Rough-leaved dogwood, Cornus drummondii

Shagbark hickory, Carya ovata

Siberian elm, Ulmus pumila

Silver maple, Acer saccarhinum

Slippery elm, Ulmus rubra

Smooth sumac, Rhus glabra

Sycamore, Platanus occidentalis

White oak, Quercus alba
